Passage

“The city's full of people who you just see around”.

―Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms

Passage is a metaphor to represent movements of people across space and time. In its figurative sense, a passage connects, unites, and creates a feeling of relatedness. This feeling can also be fragile as passages can be perceived as points of division due to their openness on opposite sites or directions. While they call for divisions, they also allow divided sides to be seen as connected. They manifest as artefacts, but they are also charged with symbolic meanings and aesthetical qualities thus creating an interdependency of function and form. As metaphorical mediators, passages are a ‘betweenness’ that is in movement, a mid-place of communication. Traditionally, passages functioned only for a purposeful crossing over, but they also serve to overcome barriers and boundaries. They offer possibilities of redirecting the pathways and going towards, living in, and dealing with the in-between.
